Emadeddin Baghi Remains in Solitary

7 , February , 2010

42 days after he was arrested and despite the fact that his interrogation has ended, Emadeddin Baghi remains in solitary confinement in ward 240 of Evin prison.

RAHANA Prisoners’ Rights Unit – Emadeddin Baghi was arrested the day after Ashura (December 28th 2009), for an interview he had done with Grand Ayatollah Montazeri 2 years ago. The interview was broadcasted by BBC and largely distributed on cyberspace after Ayatollah Montazeri’s passing in December 2009. Baghi’s family told Saham news that not only did interviewing the Ayatollah  not constitute a criminal offense, but Baghi was not aware at the time of interview when and by whom it would be broadcasted. To Baghi’s family the interview was a one-time event which occurred in the past; therefore there are no present & existing grounds to justify fears of future conspiracy or attempts to destroy evidence if Baghi is released.
Baghi’s family said that his detention is unjustified and even if there were issues with that interview, he could have answered for them in a court of law.
Baghi’s family has asked the Prosecutor to put an end to his solitary confinement and authorize prison visits. They have yet to receive an answer.
