RAHANA Prisoners’ Rights Unit – 150 days after being granted a release on $10,000 bail, and despite attempts by his friends to post the required bail, Eftekhar Barzgarian remains in ward 5 of Vakil-Abad Prison in Mashad. Barzgarian, who is an expelled Ferdosi University student, was a Karroubi campaign worker during the June presidential election.
According to a report by Neday Sabz Azadi, Barzgarian who was arrested by agents from the Intelligence Minstry in September 2009, spent the first month of his detention in solitary at the Ministry’s detention center. He was then transferred to ward 6/1 of Vakil-Abad Prison in Mashad. 50 days ago prison officials moved Barzgarian to ward 5 in the prison, reserved for dangerous inmates. Prison Authority’s own regulation requires the placement of prisoners according to their age sex and severity and nature of charges.
It is feared that the recent transfer was done to pressure the student activist into making televised confessions.
Barzgarian has been told by Intelligence Ministry agents that leaving Mashad is a condition for his release. Judge Haydari who is in charge of the case has refused to accept the bail posted by Barzgarian’s friends.
